This Lynching, That Thrashing: The Violent Politics of India

Lynchings have become a large part of the news after the recent Lok Sabha elections. But who believed these lynchings will be a daily routine followed by our very own political representatives! Political violence recently has occupied a major room all over India in the relations of the officials, irrespective of the party they belong to. The Politicians are so blindfolded with their position that they are brazenly attacking the officials on duty. They sure are representatives selected by the public but for their notice,  they can soon be canceled by the same voters because of the un-civilized behavior they have been showcasing lately.

In the Sarasala village in Telangana, a 34-year old woman forest officer C. Anitha Rao had gone for a plantation drive on land under a compensatory afforestation scheme for the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project. The woman forest official was thrashed by a mob allegedly led by the brother of a Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA.

“Even animals are not thrashed this way,” said C Anitha, who was attacked on Sunday by a group allegedly led by Koneru Krishna Rao, the younger brother of Sirpur TRS MLA Koneru Konappa, over a land issue. She alleged that the TRS MLA and his brother have a history of threatening officers in the area. Krishna said, “The forest department is terrorizing Adivasi farmers and confiscating their land forcefully. I was there to resolve the issue and to ensure justice for tribals as forest officials were destroying their crops in the name of afforestation. I tried to pacify the department authorities but in vain. The attack was accidental, not intentional.” The officer has suffered some hairline fractures on her left arm.

In another incident from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, a BJP MLA is out from jail on bail. He had hit an Indore civic body official with a cricket bat in a market filled with the public. He was arrested on Saturday and came out of the jail on Sunday.

The assaulter Akash Vijavargiya is the son of senior BJP leader Mr. Kailash Vijavargiya. Leader Kailash Vijayvargiya defended his son by saying he is a ‘novice’ player and that the issue which has been made a national issue is no big deal.

The official, who was beaten up, was part of a team that was on an anti-encroachment drive in Indore when they were approached by Akash Vijayvargiya and his supporters. Vijayvargiya had alleged that the team of officials dragged and verbally abused women occupants of a residential building. Kailash Vijayvargiya said, “I think officers should not be arrogant. They should talk to people’s representatives,”.

On Sunday, Akash’s return was celebrated with sweets, gunshots, and garlands in his neck. Vajayvargiya,  however, was unapologetic about what he did. He said, “I pray to God that I should not be given another opportunity to pick up the bat (I pray to god ki vo dobara ballebazi karne ka avsar na de),” after coming out of the prison.

BJP MLA Ram Ratan Kushwaha in Lalitpur held a meeting with his karyakarta wherein he said: If government employees don’t respect our workers, then take off your shoes and hit them because there is a limit to patience.” Sure sir! We hear from you.

Coming to the fourth incident this year, BJP legislators took it seriously. Amongst a BJP MP Sharad Tripathi and MLA, Rakesh Singh Baghel in Uttar Pradesh, disagreement between the two resulted in shoe fights; Sharad Tripathi thrashed the other with shoes. However, Rakesh Singh didn’t stay quiet, he slapped back. You won’t be very happy knowing the reasons for the quarrel. They were arguing on the placement of names in the foundation stone of a project.

How Does it Work?

Simple! Don’t listen to us and we’ll throw shoes at you. We’ll thrash you down till you agree with us. This probably might be a reason that pulls us behind every time we try to establish a civilized population in our country. Who do you rely upon while going to vote for the representatives? Because this is how civilized the candidates are whom we selected, who got elected. Do you ever wonder why are they so unapologetic towards the deeds they have performed on the camera, in front of the whole country?

How difficult it becomes to sit in an indecent manner in front of the camera? And how easy these people think it is before throwing shoes at each other. Ever wondered whose support is it? Thankfully, this time Mr. Modi has condemned Akash Vijayvargiya’s act by saying “No matter whose son he is, this is not acceptable.”

At least, now we can divert our attention towards the more needy areas of development in our country than getting aggressive on petty issues of disagreement. It’s high time all the citizens, including politicians, officials, and the general public realize that this can turn into an internal war in the country.
